I. Differences Between “Engine Remanufacturing” and “Engine Overhaul”

Many people may confuse “engine remanufacturing” with “engine overhaul.” A regular engine overhaul only involves disassembling the parts of the engine that are malfunctioning. However, due to varying levels of technical expertise among mechanics, some damaged areas may be overlooked during the inspection process, and underlying quality issues cannot be completely resolved. Moreover, engine overhauls do not include cleaning and inspection of the engine. The parts processing equipment used in overhauls is often rudimentary and cannot ensure the dimensional and positional accuracy of the parts.

In contrast, the specific process of “engine remanufacturing” begins with the collection of used engines from vehicle owners. The old engines are then completely disassembled down to individual parts. Each part is sorted and inspected. Parts that cannot be reused are directly scrapped, while usable parts are cleaned and inspected using specialized equipment. After meeting the required cleanliness standards, the engine is remanufactured using dedicated equipment, ensuring the dimensional and positional accuracy of the parts. Subsequently, precision measuring and testing equipment are used to inspect the remanufactured engine for accuracy and performance. Only after passing these inspections is the engine re-released to the market.

In summary, remanufactured engines are produced to the same standards as new engines and can even modify engine parameters according to requirements. For example, a 330-horsepower engine can be remanufactured into a 440-horsepower engine. In comparison, a regular engine overhaul only partially replaces faulty components and cannot completely eliminate hidden dangers. Additionally, there are no testing devices to inspect the engine after repair.

II. Cost Reduction and Quality Assurance of Remanufactured Engines

If it’s like buying a new machine, many truck drivers might say, isn’t it still very expensive? What I want is something cheap. In fact, because remanufacturing uses most of the parts from the old engine, saving the cost of manufacturing new parts, the cost of a remanufactured engine is only half that of a new engine (assuming the old engine is recycled; if the old engine is not recycled, the cost is about 75% of a new engine).

It is understood that the sources of parts for remanufactured engines mainly come from three aspects. First, useful parts from old engines collected from vehicle owners. Second, old parts recycled through the after-sales service of the original equipment manufacturer. Third, parts that were screened out during the new engine manufacturing process due to issues with precision or concentricity, which are then readjusted and put back into the remanufacturing production line.

In addition to having a cost of only half that of a new engine, remanufactured engines restore the fuel consumption indicators of the engine compared to the old engine before repair. This allows for more effective fuel savings and reduced operating costs during use. Moreover, remanufactured engines produced by large enterprises generally come with the same warranty service as new engines. For example, the “Qinren” service provided by Sinotruk’s authorized service stations and the three-package service provided by Weichai’s authorized repair stations nationwide reduce maintenance costs.

Another notable advantage of remanufactured engines is the ability to change the performance parameters of the existing engine. For example, the peak output horsepower, emission standards, and displacement can be modified.
